Many, many years ago, far away from our galaxy there was a planet called Krypton. Krypton, originally a desolate planet, was settled by the people now known as the Kryptonians. They built an advanced an elaborate civilization, but as their society developed, they grew cold emotionally.

When an impassioned scientist known as Jor-El brought news to the high council that the planet Krypton was unstable, they responded with disbelief. Firm in his belief, Jor-El built a small rocket for his wife Lara and their newborn son Kal-El to travel to the nearest developed planet. This planet was Earth. Lara refuses, and the pair send their only son into outer space to find a new home, never to know his parents or the planet that was Krypton.

Soon the planet explodes. Eventually, young Kal-El’s rocket lands in a small town in Kansas known as Smallville. It is discovered by a farmer and his wife, Johnathan and Martha Kent. The pair adopt the young boy, naming him Clark.

At first, the young Clark Kent has no special powers, but as he enters adolescence he begins to develop abilities such as super-strength, telescopic and microscopic vision, super-hearing, and the ability to run fast. He eventually develops a yearning to learn his origins, not knowing any gifted youths such as him.

One day, a traveler with similar powers such as him known as Mon-El crosses his paths, and they become friends, almost brothers, before they discover the lead in the Earth’s crust is lethal to Mon-El. Mon-El is sent away to another dimension to stop the lead poisoning, leaving Clark with the knowledge that while Mon-El was not the same, that there were others in the universe like him.

As Clark Kent grows older, he begins to secretly do good deeds around Smallville and the world, and he meets a trio of young heroes from the future known as the Legion of Super-heroes. These three, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl idolize the man young Clark will become, and bring him into the future and making him a member of their team. It is there in the far flung 30th century that Clark Kent finds friends with powers that he can relate to and a sense of what he wants to do with his life.

During his early twenties following high school, Clark Kent becomes a journalist, traveling around the world writing about current events, and helping secretly when he can. It is during this period that his greatest power develops; the power of flight.

Eventually Clark Kent moves to the city of Metropolis and joins the staff of metropolitan newspaper The Daily Planet, and falls in love with its resident award-winning and intrepid reporter Lois Lane. Using the information he learns as a journalist, he fights crime under the guise of Superman, one of the world’s first costumed superheroes since the 1940s. It is with this guise, that he wins the heart of Lois Lane. Also at this time, he comes toe-to-toe with his greatest adversary, and an old childhood friend gone bad, billionaire businessman Lex Luthor.

Time goes on, his superhero exploits grow, and he would soon meet his first real ally and future best friend, the mysterious urban vigilante known only as Batman. It is through this relationship that the traditionally solitary hero joins a recently formed group by the name of the Justice League and stays with it for the majority of its incarnations.

However, tragedy would strike, and Superman would meet an unstoppable foe. A mysterious Kryptonian monster known only as Doomsday. Superman would fight to the death with Doomsday and the city of Metropolis would mourn until the day of his resurrection by the means of his unique Kryptonian physiology.

Superman would overcome his greatest trial, and Clark Kent would have won the love of the woman he desired. Long after his death and rebirth, and long after villain and criminal after villain and criminal, he would gain a small circle of friends and family: a cousin from Krypton long since stranded on Earth, as well as an adopted younger brother in that of Connor Kent, a half-Kryptonian wanting to find his way as a hero, and eventually, the son of an old foe, General Zod, known as Chris Kent.

Superman would never stop saving the day, and even now, Clark Kent has not, for long, strayed from his role as one of Metropolis’s most prominent figures.

A brief encounter of Bruce with the city mob bosses makes him realize that the city is full of low life filth. He decides that he should clean it up for that purpose.

Bruce Wayne wanted to undergo training so he headed out for himalaya’s where he is trained under Ra’s Al Ghul who teaches Bruce all his combat skills and the spiritual knowledge. So bruce comes back to gotham city only to find it more corrupted than ever. Also, his father’s company, the Wayne Group has grown many time over. He is the only heir to it and thus he became rich. Bruce is still confused about how he wants to fight the crime and one day he finds a bat in his building and follows it to the back outside to an underground layer. That’s when he decides to become the batman.

Batman is also known by other names such as caped crusader and dark knight. Meanwhile, his childhood friend Rachel now becomes an attorney fighting the crime of Gotham. Bruce in order to stay low and unnoticed takes up a very lavishing life style and pretends to be a playboy. In the course of his crime fighting, Batman faces a lot of enemies like the Joker, Penguin, Two-face, Riddler, Poison Ivy, Dr. Freeze, the Ventriloquist and many more. Batman, along with Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, forms a team called the Justice League. Batman also builds them a monitoring center in earth’s orbit. Near Greece, there exists a mystical island inhabited by Amazons and sharing the same Hellenistic culture as the nearby country. This Island is called Themyscira, or Paradise Island, and is led by its Queen Hippolyta.

One day Hippolyta wanted a child and heir, and as such, she prayed to the Gods. After which, she journey’s to the coast and from clay, she forms a statue in form of a child. The gods having heard her prayers turn this statue into a child, a daughter. This young girl would grow up to be Diana of Themyscira and ultimately, the superhero known to the world as Wonder Woman.

wonder-woman-history

Six gods, showing favor on the young child, gift her with strength beyond that of her peers on Paradise Island. From six gods she receives an enhanced attribute. From the goddess Demeter she received enhanced strength. From Aphrodite, she gained beauty and kindness, from Athena she gained a keen mind, strong military skills, and wisdom. The goddess Artemis makes her swifter than others, while Hestia gives her the ability to coerce the truth from others, this manifests itself in the form of her magical lasso. Lastly, the god Hermes gives her superhuman speed and the ability to fly.

Young Diana would grow to be a formidable warrior in the Amazonian tradition. She would prove to be intelligent and brave, as well as strong and skilled in all their arts, but as time would go on, she would discover that Paradise Island is not paradise, and that there are other places in the world that she would wish to visit. Despite her mother’s wishes, she leaves, and journey’s to the outside world. It is here that she becomes a superhero and ultimately an activist and ambassador for her home.

Wonder Woman spends her life protecting others, even allying herself with others in the superhero team The Justice League. Diana would eventually lose her powers, but meet a mysterious man known as I Ching. He would train her in martial arts and they would become adventurers, partaking in feats of espionage and heroics. It is here that Diana would learn to be a hero, not as Wonder woman, but as herself, now named Diana Prince.

Soon, I Ching would presumably die, and Diana would soon regain her powers and return to her career in superheroics and the Justice League. She would then gain a ward, Donna Troy, who would follow in her footsteps as Wonder Girl and too join a team of her own, The Teen Titans.

Wonder Woman would also splinter off from the Justice League and join an alternate team, this team centered in Europe. This team would ultimately disband, and the original League would find itself with a Wonder Woman again.

Soon, Diana would find that another young girl, Cassie Sandsmark, had been chosen to be an emissary for the gods in the same vein as she was, and she needed a mentor. Diana would guide and support this new Wonder Girl while simultaneously maintaining her political and superhero career.

Diana’s relationship with the heroes Superman and Batman would grow, and often seen as synonymous with each other. Still, Diana Prince, Wonder Woman, would remain an active force for good in the world, and still today, she is on of the world’s most active internationally recognized superheroes.

Over the years comic books have become an integral part of growing up and most children at some stage in their life will read and enjoy these. Comic books have been around for 70 years or more and there are many types and genres to choose from. However the most popular must surely be the superhero variety and the number of Hollywood movies made in recent years featuring superheroes from comic books certainly demonstrates this.

Most people in the world will be aware of the most famous superheroes such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, but fewer will be aware that a number of these individual characters were formed into a team for a comic book series known as the Justice League of America. Also know as the Justice League, the comic book was created in the early 1960’s by DC Comics and followed on from an earlier publication in which the superhero team was know as the Justice Society of America.

justice-league-history

While the earlier comic book featured less well known superheroes, when it was updated to the Justice League, many of the well-know superheroes of the time were included in the team. Legend has it that the creator of the updated version, Gardner Fox, was impressed with the popularity of sport and so used League rather than Society in the name of this new comic book.

The Justice League debuted in 1960, in a publication called The Brave and the Bold and featured seven of the DC Comic superhero characters of the time. These included the well known characters Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. The members of the team which are perhaps less well known included Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.

Initially the team worked from a secret cave location near to the town of Happy Harbor, and in their first outing they came up against a giant space starfish known as Starro the Conqueror. The team mascot was a teenager called Snapper Carr who was an official member of the team and helped on their missions. However after being tricked into revealing the location of the team’s secret headquarters in a later edition of the comic, Carr resigned from the team. He has not been the only change in the team’s lineup and many other superheroes have played a part in the Justice League over the years including, amongst others, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Firestorm and Red Tornado.

After the location of their secret hideout was revealed the Justice league moved to new headquarters in later editions of the comic, this being an orbiting satellite. During this period there was generally a 12 member limit to the team with characters joining and leaving as the stories progressed. In its heyday the Justice League was one of DC Comics most popular comic books and over the years it won a number of awards. However its popularity began to wane in the 1980’s and a move from their satellite headquarters to a base in Detroit, along with a significant change in the lineup, proved unpopular in 1984.

After 261 editions, publication of the Justice League was discontinued in 1986. However the idea of a team of superheroes popularized by the Justice League during its 26 year history has led to a number of modern incarnations of the format. This has included Justice League International and JLA, but these comic books never really achieved the success of the original Justice League.

Superheroes are a special breed, which have regularly saved America and the world in comic book history. While individual superheroes have incredible powers, a team of these makes for a formidable opponent and the popularity of the Justice League during its heyday showed that comic book fans greatly enjoyed the idea of a team of superheroes.
